Personal Statement
I don’t know if the so-called genetic factor from my parents did take effect, but as early as my secondary school, I have had the “business mind”. Obtaining the supply channels from my Taiwanese classmate, I purchased a bunch of Taiwanese snacks which were not available in the campus shop, and sold to other students at a higher price than the original cost. Within a month, I earned a gross profit of 4000 RMB with which I bought the dream game machine. Although my original intention of selling snacks was just to buy what I wanted, I did understand something about doing a business successfully—taking advantage of customer needs and the market occupancy even it was just within a campus scope.
Out of the strong interest in economics, I attended Boston University for undergraduate study, majoring in Economics and Mathematics. Every time I took the holiday back in China, my father would discuss with me over the major economic events taking place throughout the world. I enjoyed sharing my perspectives about the fluctuating market and economic situation with him, some of which came from the autobiographies I read and the lectures I attended such as the lecture given at Harvard University by Jianlin Wang—one of the top businessmen in China. For some reasons, my father considers me to have great potentials in succeeding in business. I guess it is somewhat related to my eloquence. Before entering college, I had held several speeches under varied topics and each time the audience were burst into laughter. It is my father’s aspiration that after finishing higher education in the US, I could assist with his company in China. But I have got my own plan. My dream is to become a successful entrepreneur and I am clear in mind that to realize this life goal, being eloquent and learning from others’ experience were far from being enough because success can never be copied.
The past three years in Boston University has witnessed my growth in academic performance. The first semester in BU was a little bit tough for me because of the new language environment and the distinct teaching method compared to Chinese education. When I received the transcript showing a GPA below 2.0, I realized that I had to devote much more effort than the native students. After adapting to the learning environment, I found it easier than my stereotype to absorb what the professors had instructed and to apply the knowledge into projects especially when I started to take economics courses. I felt thrilled that each semester, my GPA was higher than the previous one. In Spring 2018, I even entered Dean’s List with a GPA of 3.58. In retrospect, I found myself accomplishing much treasure by exposing to the vast knowledge warehouse. Besides mastering the economic principles and transforming my thinking mode, I acquired the application of practical software such as Stata and SQL which are both essential for my future profession. In the final project of Chinese Economy, for the first time, I led the group member to do data analytics work with Stata. Throughout the research process, I took main charge of the team work, from data preparation, data calculation in Excel, to doing regression in Stata. I enjoyed the procedure, not only because I derived a formula which was close to the textbook, but also for that I understood the influence of national polies and major political events on economy through data analytics. The process of discovering the information hidden behind data fascinated me so much that I expected to dig out more about the changing business world in my career pursuit.
My short-term career goal is to be an economics analyst in an investment bank where I could quip myself with investment knowledge to guide clients to make optimal investment decisions in real practices. My ultimate career goal is to establish a Chinese Community in the US (similar to CBD in China), providing convenient service to Chinese people in all aspects because the Chinese in the US currently lack cohesion. The first location would be Flushing where Chinese are mostly gathered. If it succeeds, the second location may be California, and the last one New York. Before my career goal comes true, there is a long way for me to go. The foremost task currently is to pursue higher education in Economics. The undergraduate study has introduced me to the business world with introductory courses such as Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. In the postgraduate stage, I wish to acquire a deeper understanding of the fundamental economic principles, sharpen analytic and quantitative skills and prepare myself better for the job market through attending internships. In addition, I anticipate taking more computer courses because programming skill is equally indispensable in the business world
One of the major reasons for my choice to continue a higher pursuit in Boston University is that after four years’ education, I have got familiar with a lot of things here. I don’t have to spend extra time adapting to the academic and living atmosphere, and even some professors’ instructing methods because I may continue to take their courses. Checking the course list for masters, I discovered that I have already taken some of the courses such as CAS EC501 Microeconomic Theory and CAS EC502 Macroeconomic Theory. I would make good use of the spare time to do researches in Institute for Economic Development (IED). Under the help of Career Development Center, I would be able to make adequate preparations for the job market.
